South Dublin County Council (SDCC), in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA), is proposing sustainable transport improvements in the Old Bawn, Firhouse, and Knocklyon areas as Phase 1 of the Old Bawn to Ballyboden Active Travel Scheme (O2B).
The Council’s Active Travel Section is conducting an informal public consultation for Phase 1 and welcomes all submissions and observations on the scheme as proposed. The scheme is being prepared in accordance with Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994.
Scheme Details:
O2B Phase 1 will deliver high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure in the following locations:
Old Bawn Road from south of the junction with the N81 to north of the junction with Firhouse Road West.
Firhouse Road from east of the Killinniny Road junction to east of the Knocklyon Road junction
Ballycullen Road and Castlefield Avenue between Firhouse Road and Knocklyon Road via the existing M50 pedestrian and cyclist bridge.
Knocklyon Road from the Firhouse Road junction to the western entrance to Dargle Wood Park.
The scheme will utilize existing infrastructure where possible, particularly along Firhouse Road where the walking and cycling infrastructure is generally of good quality. New walking and cycling infrastructure will be provided where there are no existing provisions or where they are deemed unsafe or of poor quality e.g., at junctions and bus stops.
For the most part, the scheme will deliver raised, and kerb protected cycle tracks in each direction, and new or upgraded footpaths. Works at junctions will provide segregated connections for walkers, cyclists, and motorists.
In addition to the main works listed above, works are proposed on “secondary links” connecting the main routes with key trip generators such as schools, places of employment, and larger residential areas.
The proposed scheme is a key element of Cycle South Dublin (see Active Travel - SDCC) and will extend the active travel network in the southwest of the county. Phase 1 builds on the recently completed works on the Dodder Greenway and will link into the upcoming D24 Neighbourhood Cycle Network Scheme.
Public transport users will benefit from upgraded bus stops and the construction of two new stops the junction of Firhouse Road and Knocklyon Road as well as the improvements in connectivity through upgraded walking and cycling links to public transport services.

The Council are seeking views from the public to help inform the scheme design. This informal public consultation is being held on the scheme for four weeks from Friday April 21st, 2023, to 12 noon on Friday May 19th, 2023.

Following the close of this informal consultation period, the detailed design of the scheme will progress, informed by the submissions made by the public and stakeholders. Once the detailed design is completed a tender competition will be run and a construction contractor appointed to carry out the works.
