Amendment No.2: Amend and relocate a pedestrian bridge over canal

It is proposed to amend the pedestrian bridge in the Planning Scheme and relocate it to a smaller scale bridge near the 10th or 11th Lock. This amendment will reduce the scale of the bridge structure crossing the pNHA and aid in the protection of biodiversity along the canal. The proposed bridge in the SDZ provides for a wide span to create the minimum height above the canal water. A smaller bridge structure from towpath to towpath is feasible at a Lock and as such, a relocation is required to facilitate this design change. The smaller bridge will provide the permeability envisaged in the Planning Scheme as it will provide a direct link from the north bank of the canal to the strategic cycle corridor on the south bank, which the larger bridge would have crossed over the cycle route to the park and provided a longer route to the strategic cycle way. Importantly, this amendment does not compromise existing or permitted development links. All previously permitted connections are retained, and the revised alignment continues to support the connectivity objectives of the Planning Scheme. The amended (red) and proposed (blue) bridges are highlighted on the map below. This change amends the strategic pedestrian cycle route in the Planning Scheme to cross the relocated bridge.
