Litir Chumhdaigh

Rathcoole Community Council have long campaigned for the preservation and Restoration of RPS ref 313 . which is of significant Architectural value having being built in 1744 and one of the few remaining examples of Charter School designs of the period Ireland. It is listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage Reg No 11213013. The building is also of a significant social and educational historical value being the only Girls Orphanage built and operated by The Mary Mercer Trust in South Dublin , the building ,workshops where girls were trained to be servants and mill workers ,the associated farm and housing for support staff had a major influence on the development of Rathcoole, it also provided a key historical linkage to the Mary Mercer Trust and Mary Mercer with the trust still being active in South County Dublin with its support for the Mary Mercer Clinic in Tallaght. (its labeling as a Glebe house is due to a temporary later use of building by the Church of Ireland after the School moved to Castleknock)
