South Dublin County Council have initiated the Safe School Zone programme to delivery safety measures in front of schools across the county.

St. Killian's Junior National School are a candidate for such works. A travel survey was carried out at the school in April/May with the help of An Taisce’s SRTS programme and the results showed that a majority of participants were concerned about dangerous driver behaviour and safety at the school gates and supported works to calm traffic and improve visibility of the front of school area.

SDCC are proposing the following works in front of the school on Sylvan Drive;

  • High Friction markings on the road at either end of the school front and signage to show drivers that they are entering a School Zone.
  • Coloured high friction roundels along the road surface to highlight the school frontage.
  • Remove section of concrete and replace with soakaway and planted verge.
  • Regrade adjacent grass to avoid seepage onto footpath
  • Installation of pencil bollards to prevent parking at the school gate or close to the crossing.
  • Associated services, line marking and works.

These works will be executed under Section 38 of the Roads Traffic Act 1994.
