Under Section 38 of the 1994 Road Traffic Act, a Road Authority may in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users provide such traffic calming measures as it considers desirable in respect of a public road in its charge. The National Transport Authority (NTA) as supported by South Dublin County Council (SDCC) is proposing the following improvement works to facilitate the running of the W6 Orbital Bus Service from Maynooth to Tallaght, as part of the BusConnects Dublin Network Redesign.

The current carriageway cross section does not facilitate two-way movements for buses to pass in a safe manner at the existing signalised shuttle.

Description of works:

  • Extension of the existing signalised shuttle which includes relocating stop lines to new alternative location to facilitate two-way movements with adequate safe clearance. The stop lines will be relocated by approximately 88m on the southern approach and approximately 46m on the northern approach.
  • New traffic signal installation.
  • Line-marking to support extension of shuttle; new stop lines and edge of carriageway markings.
  • Extending the existing footpath on the northern approach
  • Traffic calming measures within the shuttle length to support and enforce the shuttle movement.
  • Signage
  • Vegetation clearance
  • Other safety measures may be carried out during these works

The plans and particulars of the proposed measures are available for inspection online on the Council’s Public Consultation Portal website (http://consult.sdublincoco.ie) during the period from 20th July to 18th August 2023.
