I fully support the proposed material alteration to retain St. Edmundsbury as High Amenity lands.
As a local resident, I believe this area is an irreplaceable natural asset that provides significant environmental, recreational and community benefits. Once lost to development, these benefits cannot be recreated.
Retaining St. Edmundsbury as High Amenity is consistent with the objectives of the National Planning Framework, which seeks to protect biodiversity, strengthen green infrastructure, safeguard natural capital and support Ireland's transition to a climate-resilient society. Preserving this landscape also contributes to a strong sense of place and enhances the health and wellbeing of existing and future generations.
The lands form part of an important green corridor that supports wildlife and biodiversity. They provide habitat for birds, pollinators and other native species while helping to maintain ecological connectivity within South Dublin. Development of these lands would fragment this habitat and permanently diminish the area's ecological value.
In addition to their environmental importance, these lands provide valuable open space that contributes to the character of the area. Accessible green spaces are increasingly recognised as essential public infrastructure, offering opportunities for recreation, exercise, mental wellbeing and connection with nature. As our communities grow, protecting existing green spaces becomes even more important.
The climate benefits of retaining these lands should also be recognised. Open green areas help absorb rainfall, reduce flood risk, improve air quality, moderate temperatures during periods of extreme heat and contribute to climate resilience. These ecosystem services are becoming increasingly valuable in the face of climate change.
I respectfully ask South Dublin County Council to retain St. Edmundsbury as High Amenity lands and to continue protecting this unique landscape for the benefit of biodiversity, the environment and the wider community.
