Submission in Support of Councillors’ Decision Not to Make Material Alterations at St. Edmundsbury, Lucan
To whom it may concern,
I wish to make this submission in support of the councillors’ decision not to make the proposed material alterations relating to St. Edmundsbury, Lucan, under Proposed Variation No. 2 to the South Dublin County Development Plan 2022–2028.
St. Edmundsbury is an important green space and nature area for the Lucan community. It provides environmental, recreational, visual and community value, and its protection is important for the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
Importance of St. Edmundsbury as Green Infrastructure
The lands at St. Edmundsbury form part of the local green infrastructure network. Such spaces are not simply vacant lands; they perform important ecological and community functions. They support biodiversity, provide habitat for birds, pollinators and other wildlife, and contribute to the character and setting of Lucan.
Protecting this area would help maintain a connected network of green spaces, which is essential in an urbanising area. Once such lands are rezoned or developed, their ecological and community value is difficult, if not impossible, to replace.
Biodiversity, Climate and Environmental Protection
Retaining St. Edmundsbury as green space would support biodiversity and nature restoration at a time when local authorities are expected to protect and enhance natural assets. Green areas also assist with climate resilience by absorbing rainfall, reducing surface water run-off, supporting natural drainage and helping to reduce urban heat effects.
The loss of this rich nature area would place additional pressure on remaining open spaces in Lucan and would be contrary to the need to plan for sustainable, healthy and climate-resilient communities.
Community Amenity and Quality of Life
St. Edmundsbury contributes to the quality of life of local residents by providing visual amenity, access to nature and a sense of openness within the area. Green spaces are vital for health and wellbeing, particularly for families, children, older people and those who rely on nearby open areas for informal recreation and contact with nature.
Lucan has experienced significant growth, and it is important that future planning protects existing natural assets rather than reducing them. Development should not come at the expense of important local green spaces that serve both people and wildlife.
Support for the Councillors’ Decision
I therefore support the councillors’ decision not to proceed with material alterations affecting St. Edmundsbury. This decision recognises the importance of protecting green space, biodiversity and community amenity in Lucan.
I respectfully request that South Dublin County Council maintain this position and ensure that St. Edmundsbury remains protected as an important green space and nature area for current and future generations.
