Observations

Astro
Teideal:
Objection to proposed Astro

Environmental Concerns:

  1. Loss of Biodiversity: Replacing natural grass with synthetic material eliminates habitat for insects, birds, and other small wildlife that rely on green spaces.
  2. Microplastic Pollution: Over time, artificial turf sheds microplastics and rubber infill particles, which can contaminate the soil and nearby waterways.

Community & Health Concerns:

  1. Public Health Risks: The materials used in synthetic turf can contain harmful chemicals, and there is growing concern about the long-term exposure to substances like PFAS (so-called "forever chemicals").
  2. Reduced Community Enjoyment: Natural grass supports a variety of passive and active recreational uses. Artificial turf tends to be less comfortable and inviting for picnics, lounging, or informal play.
  3. Exclusionary Design: Artificial surfaces can discourage use by certain groups, especially young children, older adults, and those with sensory sensitivities.

Financial and Maintenance Issues:

  1. High Long-Term Costs: Though advertised as low maintenance, artificial turf has a limited lifespan (typically 8–10 years) and requires costly removal and replacement.
  2. Drainage and Flooding Risks: Improper installation or clogged systems can lead to water pooling, increasing the risk of flooding and damage to nearby infrastructure.

Alternative Solutions:
I urge the council to consider investing in well-drained, drought-resistant natural grass or hybrid solutions that are both environmentally friendly and community-oriented. Permeable natural surfaces are better aligned with climate resilience and sustainability goals.

I respectfully request that this proposal be reconsidered in favor of solutions that preserve our natural environment and enhance community wellbeing.
