What is the ‘Safe Routes to School (SRTS)’ Programme?
Safe Routes to School is a national programme delivered by South Dublin County Council on behalf of An Taisce and Green Schools that encourages children and their guardians to walk or cycle to school. It also emphasises the importance of road safety in front of schools.
Glenasmole NS
Glenasmole National School is located in the Dublin Mountains in South County Dublin. The school applied to the Safe Routes to School, SRTS, programme and as such is to benefit from works in front of the school.
The rural setting provides a different set of challenges, and the emphasis will be on high speed rural road treatments to highlight the presence of the school to passing motorists to encourage them to reduce their speed.
SDCC are proposing the following works in front of the school;
High Friction markings on the road at either end of the school front and signage to show drivers that they are entering a School Zone.
Gateway signage at the entrance and exit of the School Zone.
Coloured high friction roundels along the road surface to highlight the school frontage.
Installation of pencil bollards to prevent parking at the school gate
