Under Section 38 of the 1994 Road Traffic Act, a Road Authority may in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users provide such traffic calming measures as it considers desirable in respect of a public road in its charge. South Dublin County Council (SDCC), in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) are working with AtkinsRéalis consulting engineers on a design to relocate existing bus stops along the N7 to a safer and more accessible location.
This scheme proposes to implement the relocation of two bus stops at junction 3A along the N7 Eastbound and Westbound carriageway. Concerns was raised over both bus stop locations as buses are currently required to stop in a merge/diverge lane adjacent to high speed N7 mainline traffic which is a cause of concern for increased risk of collisions between merging vehicles and slowing/stationary buses. The stops are also served by relatively narrow footpaths which raises concerns of a lack of accessibility to the stops.
Scheme Objectives:
To improve safety for users of the bus service within the vicinity of the City West Business Park.
Mitigate / remove the existing safety concerns associated with the current bus stops and pedestrian provision serving them.
Proposed Design
Eastbound Stop: The proposed design for the Junction 3A Eastbound stop is to relocate the existing stop towards the top of the slip lane at Junction 3 (within the Citywest Campus). The new stop would see to the inclusion of improved bus stop facilities and new footpaths that will tie-in to the existing pedestrian infrastructure. A bus layby area will also be provided to minimise impact on traffic flows while the bus is stationary. This new stop will significantly decrease the walking distance for pedestrians to the Citywest Business Campus, while also having an overall safer location for busses to stop, remain stationary and also re-enter the road.
Westbound Stop: The proposed design for the Junction 3A Westbound stop is to remove the existing stop along the N7 and reroute current bus operations via Bianconi Avenue and utilise an existing bus stop. This will allow commuters to access the bus stop along an off-line route instead of the mainline N7. The proposed location provides a safer and more accessible way for users to utilise the stop. Additionally, a new bus shelter will be provided at the Bianconi Avenue bus stop.
The particulars of the proposed measures are available for inspection online on the Council’s Public Consultation Portal website (http://consult.sdublincoco.ie) during the period from Thursday, September 5th to Thursday, October 3rd 2024.
