Section 38 Planning - Proposed Traffic Calming Urban Renewal Scheme - as part of a Road Safety Improvement Scheme on the N81 at Brittas Village

Section 38 Planning - Proposed Traffic Calming Urban Renewal Scheme - as part of a Road Safety Improvement Scheme on the N81 at Brittas Village
Under Section 38 of the 1994 Road Traffic Act, a Road Authority may in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users provide such traffic calming measures as it considers desirable in respect of a public road in its charge. South Dublin County Council (SDCC) proposes to install traffic calming measures designed by Kildare National Roads Office, subject to TII funding at the following locations:

Description of proposed works:
- Installation of “traffic calming” gateways at both southern and northern approaches to the village.
- Narrowing of existing carriageway to 6.5m (kerb to kerb).
- Removal of left-hand deceleration lane on N81 at junction with R114.
- Upgrade of 3No. Side Road Junctions (McDonagh’s Lane, R114, and Shady Lane) providing suitable turning radii and adequate sightlines.
- Provision of raised Zebra Pedestrian Crossing centrally in village.
- Landscaping / introducing vertical elements to create narrowing effect for traffic calming.
- Provision of new bus shelters and consolidation of existing bus stops to a single location in Village centre.
- Provision of new (and widening of existing footpaths) providing better connectivity for pedestrians.
- Amendment of Shady Lane to be Left out, Right in Only and limited to Light Goods Vehicles (less than 3.5tonne vehicle gross weight).
- Installation of kerbing so that mainline is kerbed on both sides of N81.
- Upgrade of existing drainage system including Sustainable Urban Drainage systems where suitable.
- Pavement Resurfacing Works.
- Upgrade of Public Lighting along the N81 between both traffic calming gateways.
- Hedge Trimming, tree removal if required, repainting of road markings and maintenance of existing signage.
- Landscaping with provision of Amenity Areas, pocket parks and teen spaces and recognition of the old Dublin Blessington Steam Tram that passed through the area.
- Proposed relocation of two agricultural field gated entrances to be relocated off the N81 onto Shady Lane and the R114 respectively
The Section 38 Planning Proposal will be advertised in a local newspaper circulating in the area and the plans and particulars of the proposed measures are available for inspection online on the Council’s Public Consultation Portal website (http://consult.sdublincoco.ie) during the period from 21st May 2026 to 18th June 2026.

• In writing to the Senior Executive Officer, Roads Department, Land Use, Planning and Transportation, County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24 A3XC, to be received on or before 5.00pm on 18th June, submissions should be clearly marked “Proposed Traffic Calming Urban Regeneration Scheme on the N81 at Brittas Village”
