Teideal:
200 year old Willington House demolished 1973

I believe that Wellington Lane and Road have been referred to incorrectly over the last 50 years by various authorities. The stretch from Spawell Roundabout down to the intersection with Limekiln Road should be renamed to "WILLINGTON LANE" after its original designation from the 18th century. The name became slightly changed through common usage error from 1975 onwards. Willington Lane was properly named after the house and stud that once stood on the site of St. MacDara's School and Kennington until 1973.  The old maps of Dublin show Willington as the correct name.  Currently it is believed Wellington Lane is named after the Duke of Wellington, which it never has been. The misspelling of Willington to Wellington was simply adopted through mistaken use over time.  It wipes away the lane's true history.  I attach a photo of Willington House taken during the 1930's along with an 19th century map of Templeogue.
