What is the ‘Safe Routes to School (SRTS)’ Programme?
Safe Routes to School is a national programme delivered by South Dublin County Council on behalf of An Taisce and Green Schools that encourages children and their guardians to walk or cycle to school. It also emphasises the importance of road safety in front of schools.
Scoil Aine Naofa & St Thomas JNS
The two schools are located on the same site at Esker South, Esker, Lucan, Co. Dublin , in South County Dublin. The schools applied to the Safe Routes to School, SRTS, programme and as such is to benefit from works in front of the school. Both schools are in a unique position of haveing pupils approaching access to the schools on 3 sides, the Newcastle Rd, Esker Dr and Cannonbrook Ave.
The main focus of the scheme will be on road treatments to provide a safer environment for pedestrians, children scooting and cyclists. This will include improved crossing facilities, and highlight the presence of the school to passing motorists to encourage them to reduce their speed.
SDCC are proposing the following works in front of the school;
High Friction markings on the road at either end of the school front and signage to show drivers that they are entering a School Zone.
Junction tightening and continuous footpaths on the approach to the schools.
Raised table pedestrian crossings to slow traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely.
Gateway signage at the entrance and exit of the School Zone.
Coloured high friction roundels along the road surface to highlight the school frontage.
Installation of pencil bollards to prevent parking on the path in front of the school.
Your views matter:
The Council are seeking views from the public to help inform the design of this scheme. The consultation period will be open for two weeks from 14th September 2026 and the closing date for submissions is 28th September 2026 at 6pm.

Next Steps:
Following the close of this non-statutory consultation period, the detailed design of the scheme will progress, informed by the submissions made by the public and stakeholders. Once the detailed design is completed a tender competition will be run and a construction contractor appointed to carry out the works.
