My name is Tom Moriarty and I live locally and have been the principal of Adamstown Castle ETNS since it opened in 2007. I am writing in a personal capacity.
Since I started in this position, I have seen much of what was promised in the original plan for Adamstown watered down or removed. In recent years, there has been renewed construction in the area designated as an SDZ with high-quality housing and parks.
These parks are well designed but are few in number. Airlie Park has a cricket ground, it also has a fenced all-weather football pitch and tennis grounds, not freely available to residents. The other parks consist of small slivers of land in the SDZ and are not adequate for amount of housing, primarily duplexes and apartments without front or back gardens, in Adamstown.
Proposals for the extension of Adamstown to the south and west of the current SDZ of Adamstown will lead to a substantial increase in population in a relatively small area with a density higher than most other areas in Dublin.
Residents, therefore, will need adequate parkland within a short walk of home. This cannot be offset against other parks in the greater Lucan/Clondalkin area as young families would need to travel by car to these parks; cars are increasingly being restricted in Adamstown.
To build more high-density housing or any housing on a heritage parkland site would have adverse consequences for Adamstown and the South Lucan area for generations to come.
The proposals for the development of lands adjoining Adamstown should be enough to satisfy the NTA. Quality of life and sustainability are also important considerations.
I urge you to reject the NTA’s proposal for high-density housing, put residents first by preserving these lands for the benefit of all.
