MA Finnstown Castle

Ábhair:

I wish to express my strong support for Amendment Reference 3, which removes the proposed residential zoning from the Finnstown Castle lands.

The Finnstown Castle lands are an important green space that contributes significantly to the environmental, historical, and social value of Lucan. They provide a valuable open landscape that supports biodiversity, wildlife habitats, and ecological connectivity in an area that has already experienced substantial residential development. Protecting these lands is consistent with the need to preserve and enhance green infrastructure, improve climate resilience, and safeguard natural assets for future generations.

These lands also form an integral part of the historic setting of Finnstown Castle and contribute to the distinctive character and identity of this part of Lucan. Residential development would permanently alter this setting and result in the loss of an important landscape that cannot be recreated once developed.

The lands have significant value as open space for the local community. Access to natural green areas is increasingly recognised as essential for physical health, mental wellbeing, recreation, and quality of life. As Lucan continues to expand, the retention of meaningful open space becomes increasingly important to ensure a balanced and sustainable community.

It is also important to consider the cumulative impact of development in this area. The western edge of County Dublin, particularly around Lucan, has already accommodated significant levels of residential growth, with increasingly dense housing developments placing pressure on local infrastructure, transport networks, schools, healthcare services, and recreational amenities. While the need for housing is acknowledged, not every remaining greenfield site is appropriate for residential development. Sustainable planning requires that development is balanced with the protection of strategic open spaces, particularly in areas that have already experienced extensive growth.

The Finnstown Castle lands represent one of the last remaining substantial open landscapes in this part of Lucan. Their preservation would help maintain the character of the area, provide an important visual and environmental buffer at the edge of County Dublin, and ensure that future generations benefit from accessible green space rather than the continued erosion of the area’s natural and historic assets.

For these reasons, I strongly support Amendment Reference 3 and respectfully urge the Council to retain the removal of the proposed residential zoning from the Finnstown Castle lands. Protecting these lands will deliver lasting environmental, heritage, and community benefits while promoting a more balanced and sustainable approach to future development in Lucan.
