Support for Retaining Finnstown Castle Lands as High Amenity (MA3.1)

Ábhair:

I strongly support retaining the Finnstown Castle lands identified as MA3.1 as High Amenity land.

These lands provide a vital green buffer in an area that has already experienced significant development. Seeing the open fields, wildlife, and birds from the bus each morning is a reminder of how valuable these remaining natural spaces are. They offer a sense of calm and connection with nature that is becoming increasingly rare.

The mature trees, diverse habitats, and open grounds are an invaluable asset for both local wildlife and the wider community. As development continues across the area, protecting what remains of our natural environment is more important than ever.

Future development across the county should also be linked to meaningful improvements in public transport infrastructure. It is deeply disappointing that the DART South-West project has been delayed while the Galway Ring Road has been prioritised. Communities such as Lucan cannot continue to absorb substantial growth without the transport investment needed to support it.

Lucan needs places that preserve its identity, history, and character. It also needs accessible green spaces where people can walk, play, relax, and experience nature. The Finnstown Castle lands are an irreplaceable part of that future, and I urge that their High Amenity designation be retained.

Building More Homes Is Not the Solution for Lucan

Ábhair:

Lucan has experienced rapid and sustained growth over recent years, yet the infrastructure needed to support that growth has not kept pace. The area is already under significant pressure, and adding further housing without first addressing these shortcomings will only make existing problems worse.

Our roads are congested throughout the day, making even short journeys frustrating and unpredictable. Public transport is equally overstretched. Buses are frequently full and delayed as they sit in heavy traffic, while commuter trains are often already at capacity by the time they arrive at Adamstown. Residents are being asked to accept continued development without the transport network needed to support it.

Beyond infrastructure, Lucan is also losing the green spaces, heritage, and recreational areas that contribute to the character of the community and residents’ quality of life. These spaces cannot simply be replaced once they are built on.

The priority should now be improving transport links, expanding essential public services, and protecting the area’s remaining natural and historic assets. The Finnstown Castle lands provide environmental, recreational, and heritage value that benefits the entire community. Preserving them as High Amenity land will help ensure Lucan remains a balanced, liveable place, rather than becoming increasingly overdeveloped.
