Rezoning of St Edmundsbury
I would like to state that I agree with the SDCC Cllrs vote in June not to rezone the land at St Edmundsbury for housing.
There has been an overwhelming amount of support not to rezone this beautiful area of Lucan.
Over 1800 objections just for this area have been submitted. Over 1000 people from Lucan and beyond came out to protest against this rezoning and all SDCC Cllrs voted against this motion.
The area of St Edmundsbury must be protected. This is not about transport or local infrastructure which is already at breaking point, this is about preserving Irelands much needed wild green spaces for its wildlife flora and fauna.
St Edmundsbury is a unique space providing much needed habitat for hundreds of species of Irelands native birds, mammals plants and trees.
The area that is allocated for rezoning supports all this wildlife and building houses on it would have a huge detrimental knock on effect on the ecology around it.
This is not one persons opinion, recent surveys for the building of the new hospital adjacent to St Edmundsbury have already stated the importance of presevering the area for this very reason.
Ireland is way behind the rest of Europe for native wood coverage and our wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate.
We MUST protect our precious pockets of land for our generation and beyond. To allow this to happen for the sake of 500 houses is not only short sighted but downright backward.
Yes we need houses, in the right areas that are properly planned There are countless more spaces that are suitable for housing, alot already zoned that haven't even started yet, 16,000 empty homes yet to be addressed.
We must start there and preserve the tiny amount of crucially important lands that house our native species which make this very Island what it is.
