I wish to express my full support for the decision of councillors to reject the proposed rezoning of St Edmundsbury.
This site represents one of the last significant areas of open green space in our community. Once lost to development, it can never be replaced. In the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and increasing pressure on urban environments, preserving existing natural landscapes is not a luxury—it is a necessity.
St Edmundsbury provides vital environmental benefits. Its fields, hedgerows and mature habitats support wildlife, help absorb rainfall, reduce the risk of flooding, improve air quality and contribute to carbon storage. As extreme weather events become more frequent, protecting these natural systems is both environmentally responsible and economically sensible.
Green spaces also play an essential role in the physical and mental wellbeing of local communities. They provide opportunities for recreation, exercise and connection with nature, benefiting people of all ages. As surrounding areas become increasingly developed, places like St Edmundsbury become even more valuable.
Ireland has committed to strengthening biodiversity protection and addressing the climate emergency. Decisions made at local authority level are critical in delivering these national commitments. Rejecting the rezoning of this land demonstrates responsible leadership and recognises that sustainable planning means protecting irreplaceable natural assets, not simply responding to development pressures.
I strongly urge the Council to uphold its decision and ensure that St Edmundsbury remains protected for future generations. Once green space is built upon, it is gone forever. Future residents will judge us not by how much we developed, but by what we had the foresight and courage to preserve.
