The Wellington Lane Walking and Cycling Scheme was granted planning permission by South Dublin County Council at Decembers Full Council Meeting on the 12/12/2022. Information on the scheme can be found here http://www.sdublincoco.ie/Meetings/Agenda/2263?p=6
The Wellington Lane Walking and Cycling Scheme aims to provide improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists along several streets within Templeogue, Dublin 6. The main objectives for this project are the following:
- Provide improved cycle and pedestrian facilities along the overall scheme route to improve safety for vulnerable road users;
- Enhance connectivity for the surrounding residential areas to key trip attractors within the area such as local shops, local parks, schools and playing pitches;
- Improve the modal shift for walking and cycling within the area for all road users. Improving the modal shift will help to contribute towards Ireland’s Climate Action Plan for 2030 which aims to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 51%.
The scheme extends for 4km along Wellington Road and White Hall Road from the N81 in the south up to Kimmage Road in the North. The approved scheme also includes works to Rossmore Road, Orwell Road and Limekiln Road.
As part of the grant of planning permission by Councillors, that planning permission includes the delivery of Active Travel works along Rossmore Road, however Councillors did request some amendments to the design of scheme on Rossmore Road to include some level of car parking for the schools. The Council agreed to amend the design along Rossmore Road to accommodate this requirement and that this amendment would be delivered as trail to help inform the permanent works being delivered.
The intention of works along Rossmore is to create a much safer school zone for School Children at the two large National Schools on Rossmore Road and to encourage safe walking and cycling to both schools and we hope that parents can see the real value of having this in place for their children at the school. Bike parking facilities are being installed at both Schools during the Easter Break which will increase the capacity for Bike Parking at both Schools. In addition a park and stride arrangement with the Spawell is also in place for now that can be used to facilitate additional parking that parents can avail of and walk their children across to the Schools Safely.
As set out, Active Travel works along Rossmore Road have been approved in principle and these works along Rossmore Road were completed in February 2024. As agreed with Councillors these works have been delivered as a trail and the Council will use the next 12 months to gather feedback from the local community on the detailed working arrangements of the scheme. There is now an opportunity to provide your feedback. This feedback will be used to address on the ground issues and these comments can be used to amend the design of the final permanent scheme. Once the trail is complete the Council will finalise the design of a permanent scheme that addresses practical issues experienced.
You can provide your feedback either via the survey portal here or in writing to Mbakure Johnson, Executive Engineer, Active Travel, South Dublin County Council, County Hall, Tallaght D24
