Old Bawn to Ballyboden Phase 2 Active Travel Scheme

Closed14 Jul, 2023, 12:00 - 11 Aug, 2023, 18:00

Overview

South Dublin County Council (SDCC), in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA),isproposing sustainable transport improvements along Templeroan Road, Ballyboden Way, Stocking Avenue, and Dargle Wood Park as Phase 2 of the Old Bawn to Ballyboden Active Travel Scheme (O2B).

The Council’s Active Travel Section is conducting a preliminary consultation for Phase 2 and welcomes all submissions and observations on the scheme as proposed. We are also seeking the public’s input on three specific elements of the scheme, which are outlined below.

This early engagement consultation will help to influence what form the scheme will take when it is brought before the Council under the Part VIII process. As part of the Part VIII process, there will be a six-week statutory public consultation when you will have another opportunity to give your views on the scheme.

Scheme details:

O2B Phase 2 will deliver high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure in the following locations:

  • Templeroan Road from Knocklyon Road to the Templeroan Roundabout
  • Stocking Avenue from east of the Orlagh Roundabout to the Templeroan Roundabout
  • Ballyboden Way from Templeroan roundabout to Taylor’s Lane Roundabout

The scheme will utilize existing infrastructure where possible, and new walking and cycling infrastructure will be provided where there are no existing provisions or where they are deemed unsafe or of poor quality e.g., at junctions and bus stops.

For the most part, the scheme will deliver raised, and kerb protected cycle tracks in each direction, and new or upgraded footpaths. Works at junctions will provide segregated connections for walkers, cyclists, and drivers.

In addition to the main works listed above, works are proposed on “secondary links” connecting the main routes with key trip generators such as schools, places of employment, and larger residential areas.

The proposed scheme is a key element of Cycle South Dublin (see Active Travel - SDCC) and will extend the active travel network in the southwest of the county. Phase 2 builds on the recently completed works on the Dodder Greenway and other schemes planned under Cycle South Dublin and will link into O2B Phase 1 which is being developed in parallel.

Public transport users will benefit from upgraded bus stops and improvements in connectivity through upgraded walking and cycling links to public transport services.

Why your views matter

The Council are seeking views from the public to help inform the scheme design. This preliminary public consultation is being held on the scheme for four weeks from Friday July 14th, 2023, to 6 pm on Friday August 11th, 2023.

  1. Route options for a shared use path through Knockcullen to link the northern end of Templeroan Road with Knocklyon Road
  2. Choice of alternatives on Ballyboden Way between Taylor’s Lane and Templeroan roundabouts
  3. Feedback on proposed junction upgrade to the Taylor’s Lane roundabout
