WHAT is happening

The South Dublin County Council’s Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway project team are exploring alteration to the Lucan Boardwalk which will reduce the environmental and construction impact of the approved boardwalk to Sarsfield Park and the Lucan area.

South Dublin County Council, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, are actively trying to develop an improved cycle network throughout the county. This new network is intended to provide more sustainable transport options for commuters as well as active travel benefits for local communities.

The Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway Part 8 was approved in November 2022. The project will provide 8+ km of new/improved walking and cycling facilities connecting Lucan Village to the Grand Canal mainly through Griffeen Valley Park, and links to 5+ schools, residential communities, and other local amenities. It included the Lucan Boardwalk which creates a safe walking and cycling link to Lucan Village which is accessible to everyone.

We are asking the public to consider the following alterations to the boardwalk design.

WHY is it happening

The boardwalk approved in the Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway Part 8 was 218m long and fully segregated from Lucan Road. During the detailed design development, Site Investigations works were carried out in Sarsfield Park in Q3 of 2024. During that, it was determined that the approved proposed boardwalk would require significantly more tree removal. While this impact was considered and assessed during planning, the team deemed it important to explore alternative solutions with would reduce the impact on the environment without compromising vulnerable users’ (pedestrians and cyclists) safety.

WHAT is proposed

Proposed altered boardwalk design

The proposed altered boardwalk will have a 60% reduction in length. A smaller footprint will have the following impact:

  • a 60% reduction in tree removal,
  • Traffic Calming and reduced impact on traffic during construction,
  • 8 parking spaces will need to be removed or reallocated to Sarsfield Park, and
  • A potential 20-40% reduction in construction costs.

Environmental Impact

The construction of altered boardwalk design would have significantly reduced trees/woodland removal. These trees/woodlands would be replaced in a 2:1 ratio, 2 trees/sqm planted for every 1 tree/sqm removed. The planting would be between the boardwalk and Sarsfield Park, extending the treeline and providing a visual screening of the boardwalk.

Traffic Calming

In order to accommodate these alterations, the section of Lucan Road which is 6m will be extended to the Brookvale Park entrance, increasing the calming traffic heading into Lucan Village.  The images below illustrate the existing and proposed sections of Lucan Road. See drawings set for additional information.

Parking Relocated

To accommodate these changes, 8 on-street parking spaces would need to be relocated to a new parking area, which could be constructed on Sarsfield Park, approximately 75 m from Chapel Hill.

WHEN is it happening

If it’s determined not to alter the design of the boardwalk, the approved Part 8 Design (full boardwalk length) will be progressed. It is envisaged that construction would commence on this phase in 2026.
