Lucan has already accommodated more than its fair share of development over the past number of years. The issue is no longer a lack of housing, but a lack of the infrastructure, amenities, and green spaces needed to support the population that already lives here. Every new housing development places further pressure on roads, public transport, schools, healthcare services, and recreational facilities that are already operating beyond capacity.

Traffic congestion has become part of daily life, with journeys that should take minutes regularly taking far longer. Buses are overcrowded and delayed because they are forced to sit in the same traffic as private cars. Trains are often already full by the time they reach Adamstown, leaving many commuters without reliable access to public transport. This is not sustainable.

At the same time, Lucan is steadily losing the very things that make it a desirable place to live—its open spaces, natural habitats, heritage, and sense of identity. Once these green areas are built on, they are gone forever. Rather than replacing one of the area’s last remaining green buffers with more housing, the priority should be investing in transport, public services, community facilities, and protecting the historic and environmental assets that benefit everyone.

The Finnstown Castle lands are far more valuable as a protected High Amenity space than as another housing development. Lucan does not need more houses at the expense of its history, wildlife, and quality of life. It needs the infrastructure and green spaces to support the community that already calls it home.
