Retain high amenity zoning for St Edmundsbury
Caibidil:
MA St. Edmundsbury
Ábhair:
MA6.1

I wish to make a submission supporting the retention of the High Amenity zoning for St Edmundsbury on environmental grounds.

St Edmundsbury represents an important area of mature landscape, established tree cover, biodiversity, and open green space that contributes significantly to the environmental quality of the surrounding area. The existing High Amenity zoning recognises these values and provides an appropriate level of protection against development that would diminish the area’s ecological and landscape character.

1. Biodiversity and Habitat Protection

The mature trees, hedgerows, and established vegetation within St Edmundsbury provide habitat for birds, bats, pollinators, and other wildlife. These interconnected green spaces contribute to local biodiversity and ecological resilience. Increased development pressure would inevitably lead to habitat fragmentation, loss of mature vegetation, and reduced ecological connectivity.

Retaining the High Amenity zoning would help safeguard these habitats and support biodiversity objectives contained within national and local planning policy.

2. Climate Change and Carbon Storage

The mature tree canopy acts as an important carbon sink while also helping to moderate local temperatures, improve air quality, and reduce urban heat island effects. Existing green infrastructure delivers ecosystem services that would take decades to replace if lost through redevelopment.

Maintaining the current zoning aligns with climate adaptation and mitigation objectives by preserving established natural assets.

3. Surface Water Management

Green space and permeable ground within St Edmundsbury play an important role in absorbing rainfall, reducing surface water runoff, and lowering flood risk. Increased site coverage and hard surfacing associated with intensified development would reduce these natural drainage functions.

Retaining the High Amenity designation supports sustainable water management and enhances climate resilience.

4. Landscape Character

St Edmundsbury has a distinctive landscape character created by mature planting, generous open space, and low-density development. This landscape makes a significant contribution to the visual amenity of the locality and forms part of the area’s environmental identity.

The High Amenity zoning appropriately recognises these characteristics and ensures that any future changes remain compatible with the established landscape.

5. Community Health and Wellbeing

Access to mature green environments has well-established benefits for physical health, mental wellbeing, recreation, and social cohesion. Preserving St Edmundsbury’s environmental qualities benefits not only nearby residents but also the wider community.

Retaining the High Amenity zoning supports healthy neighbourhoods and sustainable communities.

Conclusion

The environmental value of St Edmundsbury extends beyond individual properties. Its mature landscape, biodiversity, ecological functions, and contribution to climate resilience justify the continued protection afforded by the High Amenity zoning.

For these reasons, I respectfully request that the planning authority retain the existing High Amenity zoning for St Edmundsbury. Doing so will protect an important environmental asset, support biodiversity and climate objectives, preserve landscape character, and ensure that the area’s significant natural amenity is maintained for future generations.
