Objection to rezoning of St Edmunsbury

I strongly support retaining St Edmundsbury as High Amenity Lands.

This area is an important green space that provides significant environmental, ecological and community benefits. Retaining its High Amenity designation is consistent with the National Planning Framework, which seeks to enhance amenity, protect natural heritage, support biodiversity, and enable Ireland's transition to a climate-resilient society.

The lands form part of an important green infrastructure network and contribute to biodiversity, natural capital and ecological connectivity. Development of this site would fragment ecological corridors, reduce habitat for wildlife and damage the integrity of the surrounding landscape. Once these natural assets are lost, they cannot easily be replaced.

The National Planning Framework also recognises the importance of creating and protecting a high-quality sense of place. St Edmundsbury provides valuable open green space that contributes to the health, wellbeing and quality of life of the local community. It offers opportunities for recreation, connection with nature and enjoyment of an attractive landscape, all of which are increasingly important in a growing urban area.

Protecting these lands is not only about preserving what exists today but also about ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from accessible green space, biodiversity and a healthy environment. I therefore strongly urge the Council to retain St Edmundsbury as High Amenity Lands in the final Development Plan.
