SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL SPECIAL SPEED LIMIT BYE-LAWS 2026 

South Dublin County Council (SDCC), in accordance with Section 9 of the Road Traffic Act 2004 (as amended), intends to prepare Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws for built-up and urban areas within the administrative area of South Dublin County.

The review supports the Government's Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030, Our Journey Towards Vision Zero, and the Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits in Ireland.

School Zones

It is proposed that 25 school locations will have periodic 30 km/h speed limits applied during school opening and closing times.

Housing Estates

South Dublin County Council has implemented a 30 km/h speed limit in all residential housing estates under its charge, supporting safer neighbourhoods and improved road safety.

Urban speed limits under review include 30 km/h, 50 km/h, 60 km/h and 80 km/h.

Consultation Period: Thursday, 6 August 2026 to Friday, 4 September 2026.

The draft bye-laws maps and document of the proposed amendments are available for inspection during normal office hours from 06/08/2026 to 04/09/2026 (both dates inclusive) at the following locations:

• Provide a clear description of the location, including a geo-location, map reference or Eircode where available.
• Explain why the location is suitable for the proposed speed limit and how it meets the relevant speed limit assessment criteria.
